Will the reconfigured Arlington Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department be bigger and better, or does it just mean more work for not enough people? New Director Gary Packan discusses budgets, staffing, acquisitions and maintenance, new and old responsibilities, volunteer expectations, and what will be needed to maintain the award-winning service that the National Recreation and Park Association recognized with its Gold Medal in 2018. Gary joined the city in November 2025 after filling a similar position in Denton since 2018. In Arlington he oversees a vast portfolio — more than 100 parks, six recreation centers, four golf courses, animal services, the esports stadium, and miles of trails and waterways. Prior to Denton, he spent over a decade as assistant director of Arlington Parks and Rec; he previously held leadership roles in Ohio as Sandusky assistant city manager and director of Huron Parks and Recreation. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in recreation and leisure services from Bowling Green State University and is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.
