A lot of my positive behavior strategies revolve around being more positive and less negative, and this includes positive reinforcement but also just providing general feedback to your child. Instead of saying stop that, you’re in trouble now, raising your eyebrows, yelling, and/or just nagging your child even, consider recognizing their positive behavior and reinforcing that with recognition and words of encouragement. In today’s video I’m talking about praising children and how I mark down positive behaviors, feedback and praise and compare that to the negative reactions parents and professionals give children. You can do this too on a simple sheet and a couple columns. This way you have a good idea of how much positive praise your child is getting, whether it’s effective praise, and whether you need to change the way you interact with your child to establish stronger positive behavior support. Because at the end of the day, raising a child with autism can be stressful, but the more positive we are, the less problem behaviors there are, the happier you, your child, and others around your child will be.
