The song was modified and adopted as an anthem for Italian resistance movements by the partisans who opposed Nazism and fascism, and fought against the occupying forces of Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1945. Versions of "Bella ciao" continue to be sung worldwide as a hymn of freedom and resistance. I sing this now for those fighting for freedom in Iran, Ukraine, Palestine, and across the world. May we all one day find peace in equality and dignity.
