The one drum you've heard on a million hits didn’t come from a plugin — it came from a drum machine. In this video, I tell the real story of how the kick drum from the Roland TR-808 evolved into the massive bass sound that now defines hip-hop, trap, pop and much of modern music. What started as a simple analog drum sound was re-recorded, processed, and shaped over decades into the foundation of countless hit records. Having recorded and mixed some of the biggest rap songs of the era, I show exactly how this sound was used and demonstrate a few of the technical things I did that contributed to the evolution of the 808 sound. I also talk with Mr. Collipark (the producer for the Ying Yang Twins, V.I.C., Soulja Boy, Bubba Sparxxx and others) about his early days using the 808 drums sound and his thoughts on how it became one of the most prevalent sounds in music today. This isn’t theory or internet history — it’s the studio reality behind one sound you’ve heard a million times. Once you hear it, you’ll never hear music the same way again. If you have any thoughts or opinions about this, leave a comment.
