They must be fed hard shelled foods to grind them down *Carnivorous *Feed them snails, custaceans (crayfish tails, small shrimp, krill), clams/mussels, insects (bloodworms, blackworms), or high quality frozen foods such as Mysis shrimp or brine shrimp *Avoid flakes or soft pellet only diet as it won't wear down their teeth *Avoid fatty or oily meats as it can cause liver issues *Feed once or twice daily (small portions) and remove uneaten food *They are messy eaters *Soaking frozen foods in vitamins like Vitachem can boost immunity *Offer variety in their diet Beak (Tooth) Maintenance *Don't wear down enough in captivity without effort *Shell-on foods are essential *If beak overgrows, it may need to be manually trimmed by a professional *Overgrown beak may cause them to not eat properly and starve *Indian dwarf puffer or pea puffers might be a good alternative if you don't want to deal with this Tank Mates *Be cautious, puffers can be semi-aggressive and nip at the fins of other fish *Fast, peaceful schooling fish such as rummy nose tetras, hatchetfish, danios, corydoras, plecos, oto cats *Other amazon puffers work (3+ is ideal to spread aggression) *Avoid long finned or slow fish such as bettas or angelfish *Avoid fin nippers like tiger barbs *Avoid shrimp or small inverts as they will be eaten *Avoid aggressive and territorial fish such as cichlids Breeding *Extremely rare in captivity *Sexing is difficult as there is no known sexual dimorphism Disease *Typical ich, internal parasites, overgrown beaks *Prevent by quarantine new fish and food, clean and stable water conditions *Choose fish from a reputable source with round bellies and clear eyes *Avoid puffers with signs of emaciation or clamped fins *PraziPro and Levamisole are great for deworming, I use them Conclusion *Probably a good idea to have a snail colony to supply food constantly *Keep their tank engaging, bored puffers may nip or sulk *Not for beginners #puffer #pufferfish #careguide #aquarium #fish #aquascape #amazonpuffer
