Literally at 11 o'clock when we opened our doors for business, ICE officers alongside with marshals, went into Jersey Kebab. And, within two minutes, they were out with my parents with no questions answered at all…And that day, my dad was released with an ankle monitor, but my mom was held, and she was sent to a detention facility up in Elizabeth and she was there for about 15 days until we were awarded a bond hearing.” 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Celal Emanet, restaurant owner: “Because when, you know, calamity hits you, you need some help besides God. Of course, God helps you. But you want to see some people around you. Thank God, you know thousand and thousand people they came in. You know, when you see that kind of things, you will be happy. You are happy.” 14. Various of restaurant’s exterior STORYLINE: The detention of a Turkish couple, Celal and Emine Emanet, who own a New Jersey kebab shop helped galvanize their community against immigration crackdowns last year. Supporters of the restaurant in southern New Jersey held a vigil and raised $300,000 to help them. They've had assistance from elected officials. Their son, Muhammed Emanet, has blossomed as an advocate. Their business has become more popular and moved into a bigger space. Like before, they continue to offer free food to those who need help. Judy Kubit and Linda Rey, who live in farther flung southern New Jersey towns, came to Haddon Township last year for an anti-Trump “No Kings” rally. When they realized the locally famous restaurant was nearby, they had a post-protest lunch there.
