In this series, I, Behzad Bolour, will show you how Ancient Iranians, also known as Persians, drank their wine and spirits. I have collected information from various millennia and a vast geographical region that includes today's Iran, extending all the way to the Mediterranean, and from the east to the borders of China, and beyond the Persian Gulf in the south. This journey reveals how they had fun drinking wine! I use actual vessels and quickly go through traditions that I know of, which are beyond today's norms. You will see vessels from private collections dating back to 3000 BC up to the 10th century AD. I hope to bring back to life a significant part of Persian heritage so you can, in return, "Have Fun... Drinking Wine." Part 1: Prehistoric Big Parties, Terracotta Vessels Explore the earliest evidence of wine consumption in prehistoric Iran, where large gatherings were accompanied by the use of terracotta vessels. These ancient parties set the stage for the rich tradition of wine drinking that followed. Part 2: Achaemenids and Their Magic Phiale Silverware Dive into the era of the Achaemenids, renowned for their elegant and magical phiale silverware. These vessels were not only functional but also held significant cultural and ritual importance, reflecting the sophistication of Achaemenid society. Part 3: Parthians' Mystic Wine Vessels, Turquoise Ware Discover the Parthians' unique approach to wine drinking with their mystic wine vessels and exquisite turquoise ware. This period is marked by a blend of influences, resulting in distinctive and enchanting drinking vessels. Part 4: The Sasanians & Centuries After, New Shapes and Animal Motifs In this period of Iranian culture that is sync with byzantine time in europe, drinking became fun and lost its ritual qualities that it had during achaemenids & the Parthians. its about lots of drinking and music and dance. its time for a new shape in Phiale, the wine drinking cup.
