HEAT PUMP on RADIATORS, the SECRET to knowing if it works But can the heat pump work on radiators? What are the variables? What are the conditions? Today I will give you the tools to understand independently and without paying anyone if you can evaluate this strategy for your home. The heat pump is certainly an innovative product, advertised by everyone and of great quality. Be careful though… It's not good for everyone, in some cases it might not make sense. FIRST PREMISE There are no commercial heat pumps and professional heat pumps, they are two distinctions related to marketing. It is a distinction that is made at the level of name. We can simplify that whoever talks about professional heat pumps has a high-quality product to sell and pushes for that product, but it is good to remember one thing: the top-of-the-range product may not necessarily be the right one. Want an example? If you're an 80-year-old you don't necessarily need an iPhone, a Brondi might be enough. If you live in the woods it might make more sense to buy a Panda than a Ferrari. The same goes for heat pumps. Obviously there are differences between the various systems, I also described them in a video whose link I'll leave you here at the bottom! SECOND PREMISE The heat pump is a heat transporter, not a generator. Heat travels from a hot spot to a cold spot and the heat pump takes the heat outside and brings it inside the house. Obviously, its efficiency varies according to the external temperatures. The colder it is outside, the more difficult it is to absorb and therefore consume more. If it's 0°C and I have to send the water at 35°C, my consumption is X But if it's -10°C outside and I have to send the water to 50°C, consumption will be higher. That said, do you want to know the truth? The heat pump is more convenient on the floor than on radiators. Why? Take an automotive example. Our delivery temperature can be compared to the speed of a car. 35°C we compare them to 100 km/h, while 55°C we compare them to 180 km/h All cars reach 100 km/h more or less, just like all heat pumps are able to work at 35°C. However, if I want to travel at 180 km/h, not all cars can make it, just like heat. Maybe they manage to reach 55° but not to maintain that temperature. A Panda pushed to maximum speed at 150 km/h may get there, but it can't do it for an extended period of time otherwise the engine will burn out. A Maserati can do it, but obviously at 180 km/h it consumes more than a panda at 100 km/h and it also costs much more. If you want to take advantage of the heat pump on radiators, you are going for the high cost and high consumption option. But what influences the consumption and performance of a heat pump? The flow temperature, the temperature inside the radiators. And it is precisely here that we find the answer. If we have a car that travels at 180 km/h for 10 hours, it will travel 1800 km, but if I take a car that travels at 90 km/h for 20 hours, I will still arrive at my destination. Radiator systems are designed to work at 70° C for 12 hours, and heat pumps cannot reach those temperatures. So how to do? 1. LOWER THE DELIVERY TEMPERATURE We can lower the flow temperature and increase the hours of operation, dynamically designing the home. Set the fixed thermostat, keep the heating system active and you will be able to check if the conditions are right for this type of intervention. 2. INCREASE THE EXCHANGE SURFACE In fact, the heat is transported according to what is the exchange surface. 3. INSTALLING A FANCOIL These are systems that work at a lower temperature, it is important to understand that it is necessary to intervene not on the generator, but on the radiant system. In any case, remember that every home has its own characteristics and each of us has our own needs, so it is important to rely on serious professionals who listen to your wishes and offer you the RIGHT solution.
