In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy explores the anatomy and function of the pons, a central structure of the brainstem that serves as a communication hub between the cerebrum, cerebellum, and spinal cord. We begin by identifying the external anatomical landmarks, such as the prominent bulging ventral surface created by transverse pontine fibers, the basilar groove accommodating the basilar artery, and the attachment sites for cranial nerves V through VIII. We also examine the dorsal surface, which contributes to the floor of the fourth ventricle. We then move into the internal organization of the pons, discussing the separation into a ventral (basilar) portion and a dorsal (tegmental) portion. The ventral pons contains pontine nuclei that relay information from the motor cortex to the cerebellum via the middle cerebellar peduncles, while the dorsal pons houses sensory and motor cranial nerve nuclei, reticular formation components, and ascending/descending tracts. Functionally, the lecture covers the pons’ role in relaying motor commands, processing sensory input, and maintaining key autonomic functions. Special emphasis is placed on its involvement in coordinating breathing patterns through the pontine respiratory group and integrating signals for balance, posture, and voluntary movement. We also highlight its critical role as a bridge in cerebellar communication, ensuring smooth and precise motor control.
