Hello TPW Family, and welcome to yet another edition of Bookstore Shenanigans! On today’s episode I wanted to walk you through a bit of our Black History Month display and highlight a bit of what I have read thus far. We currently have a mini Richard Wright display, front and center when you first walk into The Printed Word. There are six titles in total in that collection and we’re excited to see if there are any Richard Wright fans here in Hampton Roads! From our special Black History Month collection, I chose to read an excerpt from the one about W.E.B. Du Bois. I’ve only just started my journey to educating myself on black history this month and already I’ve learned that I had been mispronouncing his last name all my life! Live and learn folks! Anyway, although I only read the first two chapters there were a couple of things I was able to take away from them. I didn’t know that Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois had opposite approaches to activism. Considering how their upbringings were almost the polar opposite, this actually makes sense. I’m also fascinated and to be honest a bit convicted by how diligent and hard working W.E.B. Du Bois was. After spending two years studying abroad, he had no job and no prospects lined up in America and yet he didn’t let that stop him from pursuing excellence. He sent letters to almost every black university. It really forces you to face your own diligence or lack thereof. Lastly, I surprisingly took away the importance of our role here in the community as a local bookstore. A local bookstore owner recognized W.E.B. Du Bois’ potential and poured into him via a set of history books that Du Bois would treasure to be so valuable that he kept them for the rest of his life. That’s powerful! It reinvigorates me to put forth our best efforts to be a light here in Portsmouth and pour into all of our patrons because you never know where that will lead them in life. It’s also a reminder that you should head over to your local bookstore, it could change the trajectory of your life! As always, remember to stay in the books! -TPWB [The Printed Word Bookstore] The Printed Word Bookstore is open: Tuesday: 10am-6pm Wednesday: 4-7pm Thursday: 10am-6pm Friday: 4-7pm Saturday: 10am-4pm You can visit us at 5901 Churchland Blvd., Portsmouth, VA.
