A special thank you to all of you who have helped me out with my channel. Every like, or comment, or subscription means the world to me. I am in the midst of making a ton of videos. Please let me know what you guys think. I am terribly sorry for the delay on this, and the potassium ferricyanide crystal videos. I lost part of my video stock due a really, really crappy hardware failure. Please bear with me as I get all of this stuff back on track. Chrome Alum provided by: / styropyro Audio Translation Hi everyone, In this video I will show you how to make Chrome Alum Crystals. Chrome Alum is a double salt, formed between Chromium Alum, and Potassium Aluminum Sulfate. For this experiment you will need: • Distilled Water • Potassium Aluminum Sulfate (Alum) • Chromium Alum (12g) • Gloves • Safety Glasses • A Glass beaker • Lab Scale (Optional) • A pen/pencil (Single Crystal) • Thread (Single Crystal) [DANGER WILL ROBINSON] This experiment contains compounds that are mildly toxic, do not preform them without proper safety procedures in place. Be sure to only use chemicals after obtaining their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and ensuring you have taken all safety steps. First we will need to weigh out 100g Alum, then we will need to add to this 12 grams of Chromium Alum. These two salts will need to be dissolved in 400 mL of HOT water. Once everything is dissolved we can place our beaker aside for a few days to allow the excess salt to settle out onto the bottom of the container. After 2 days, I chose the largest of the “seed” crystals, and placed them back into the solution. However, you must first filter the solution to remove the extra solid crystals. These crystals can be repurposed for a later batch of Chrome Alum crystals, as you can use them as seeds, or you can dissolve them with hot water. Since I do not plan on making a single crystal, the pen and thread are not needed. With your seed crystals in the freshly filtered container, I recommend placing the beaker somewhere where the temperature is regular, or regulated. An idea place is up high, in a cabinet, or closet. The longer you let your crystal solution sit, the larger they will become. You may accelerate crystal growth by blowing air on the solution, to diffuse the solvent into the air. Any large fan will do, just be sure you do not allow someone to mistake your container for a tasty beverage! With my crystal I used Alum I purchased from eBay. The quality is not that good, and it seems to crystallize faster than expected. As such I have a cloudy, irregular mass. Even though, it is a very beautiful crystal.
