Plants contain thousands of bioactive compounds called phytochemicals — substances that aren’t classified as essential nutrients, yet repeatedly show up in research on immunity, metabolism, gut health and brain function. In this video, I explain what phytochemicals are, how they work (without the hype), why you don’t need “25,000 compounds,” and how plant foods communicate with your gut microbes, immune system and nervous system. We’ll cover hormesis, inflammation regulation, microbial metabolism, and what this means for everyday eating — without supplements, fear, or fads. This isn’t about understanding how food acts as ecological information. I'm Dr Jake M. Robinson — a microbial ecologist and academic specialising in biodiversity and human health. I hold degrees in ecology, ecosystem health, social research, and neuroscience, with a PhD in microbial ecology and nature-based health interventions. I'm currently based at Flinders University, South Australia. Subscribe for more nature-gut-brain tools for everyday wellbeing.
