The 12 noir meditations are divided into four suites as follows: Suite I (SETTLING) – tracks 1-3; Suite II (STILLNESS) – tracks 4-6; Suite III (EXPOSURE) – tracks 7-9; and Suite IV (ACCEPTANCE) – tracks 10-12. The 4-suite ensemble explores quietness not as calm, but as presence held without movement. The piano pieces (3 per suite) avoid repetition, development, and emotional narrative. Instead, each meditation unfolds as a sparse field of sound and silence, where gestures appear briefly, then withdraw, leaving attention exposed rather than comforted. There is no progression across the cycle, and no expectation of arrival. Silence is structural, not decorative; notes appear only when necessary. The listener is not guided toward relaxation, but enticed to remain alert within restraint. These meditations do not seek transcendence or resolution. They simply hold space—bare, minimal, and quietly watchful—until listening itself becomes the subject. Noir Meditations – Where presence replaces pattern (4 suites). Exposure without emphasis. Noir Meditation No. 7 (Unshielded) marks the quiet threshold between inward stillness and exposure. The gestures are spare and unprotected, emerging without preparation and receding without resolution. There is no drama here — only awareness stepping slightly forward. Each note stands alone, unembellished, neither seeking reassurance nor offering it. This piece does not move toward conclusion. It remains present — attentive, unguarded. Part of the Noir Meditations cycle — a series of long-form, minimalist piano improvisations exploring interior states without narrative or repetition. Performed and composed by Seneka Abeyratne (snabeyratne@gmail.com) Genre: Noir – Contemporary Instrument: Yamaha Digital Piano About the artist: Seneka Abeyratne, a retired Sri Lankan economist, has numerous creative interests, including writing (fiction/drama), photography, digital art, dancing (ballet/contemporary), choreography (classical-contemporary), and seeking beauty in dissonance through solo piano improvisations (noir classical/noir free jazz). He is a widely published author and winner of three prestigious local literary awards, including the Gratiaen Prize. His evocative, digitally altered images have been exhibited in Sri Lanka and France. Whether through word, image, or sound, his art remains an exploration of introspection — an unhurried dialogue between shadow and soul.
