Vasiliy Antipov plays in October 2025 on the Kern-Orgel in Kleinen Saal der HfMDK (Frankfurt) Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 At long last, I’ve had the chance to record this great work — Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. Above all, I wanted to convey two things: first, the Bachian fabric with maximum clarity; and second, the sense of inevitability with which events unfold in this piece. This is, one might say, a super-task, and I plan to return to this giant piece again and again in future recordings. When I set about realizing this idea, I couldn’t get one particular recording out of my mind — Helmut Walcha’s Passacaglia (do be curious: find it and listen). Everything there is so perfect that it seems there’s no point even trying to add anything new. It’s like playing Bach’s solo violin music after Henryk Szeryng. Yet when I began to play the Passacaglia myself, it revealed an entirely different side to me — and that is what I decided to show in my recording. I have accompanied it with a manuscript from Bach’s notebook (one of the early versions). Later emendations were gathered from other manuscripts copied by Bach’s pupils. Thus, in places where those changes are crucial — or where the original is not entirely legible — you will see colored notes. I prepared them myself; they reflect the Passacaglia as it is published and performed today. I merely color-coded the voices to make the polyphony more visually evident. All the unusual, odd passages — in particular those where one must play with a single hand on two manuals to preserve Bach’s intention (as written in the score) — are specially marked. But that is for specialists. For everyone else, there is the sound: enjoy. At the very least, you will hear each voice with exceptional clarity — with no “mush” and no indistinct rumble anywhere. As for the registration: this small organ is located in the small hall of the Frankfurt Conservatory and currently needs tuning — in particular, the A-flat in the pedal. This imposed significant constraints on the choice of stops. I hope this minor issue won’t prevent you from enjoying this masterpiece.
