Based on the date, you might put together the narrative that THIS was the reason for abandoning the TvC action in such a way as I was forced to proclaim "TOO EARLY!" ...because based on the date, this was indeed the FINAL DAY of Nintendo WFC's service. --- 19 May 2014 Mii (Yami Joou) Flame Flyer The Flame Flyer is probably my default "I don't know what to choose" option, because it handles most according to my natural handling preferences WITHOUT throwing myself off a cliff metaphorically speaking with the Jetsetter. (It's just too much power and too much responsibility!) I'm weirded out in hindsight by how Miis sound different each time they're included in a Mario Kart, what with more recent attempts sounding like an unholy fusion of Shy Guy and Birdo with some token pitch shifts. (At least we don't have Tomodachi Life's vocalizer situation being established at Mii-level... shudder The uncanny valley has come to devour us all!) --- Race #1 -- Grumble Volcano One thing I definitely don't miss about these older days is that they were also my earliest experiences using new capture software, which had some particular new quirks worth getting used to ... which also means there's some graphical hiccups here and there. I'd miss Grumble Volcano more if it wasn't in Mario Kart 8... and it's FABULOUS there...and missing one glitchy abusive "shortcut," too!), but even courses from only one console iteration ago look wildly different. I don't even feel slightly guilty about wrecking Eldon's race, because the Thunder Cloud is the single most stressful item in Mario Kart history. Yes, even more than the Blue Spiny Shell. At least there's a constructive(ly destructive) purpose behind that one, but THIS guy shows up when you least need him and he's not guaranteed to help you out either. It's strange seeing old items you remember but haven't had any encounters with in awhile due to item mix tweaks. It's weird hearing the Mega Mushroom theme again... and I pine for the sneakier days when Fake Item Boxes were a regular thing. --- Race #2 -- SNES Mario Circuit 3 If the Jetsetter is too much responsibility outright, the Flame Flyer isn't much less heavy-handed for the driver who's taken a break from karting for awhile. If the course turns get too demanding, you really can't take the liberty of trying to get down-and-dirty with the other players and their items and YOUR items become a mandatory safety measure against unexpected things you don't have the chance to avoid safely otherwise. Suffice to say this doesn't work out all that well for me either if I'm out of practice, since driving is a cakewalk compared to proper utilization of items, much less WHILE driving under the circumstances. --- Race #3 -- Moo Moo Meadows Of course, a simpler track doesn't guarantee success either, because ALL players across the board will be more strongly impacted by items with fewer defensive driving options and more opportunities in general to use them without other mitigating factors involved. So what I'm hearing from my own admission is that my general "problem" with always getting taken out catastrophically by other player's items is allegedly out of my hands either way... ... ...sounds like someone just needs to "git gud" already. (But I don't LIKE to practice!) --- Race #4 -- Moonview Highway So then... wait, this one's more complicated, which is good... but the driving will be more demanding... which is bad... but also good... and items will... nghhh... gah! Too much extra complications thrown in! --- Sprinter Mii (Jo) Now, if the Jetsetter is too much responsibility, it won't help that the Sprinter is basically the same vehicle for a different weight class. I also never really liked some particular segments of the Mii options in the Wii era, as wide a variety of situations as they could cover for, being an entirely new thing. Maybe that's why I originally invented Yuki and Yami Joou... --- Race #5 -- DS Delfino Square Well, now I'm confessed to have this as my favorite track from Mario Kart DS, but it has BOTH the simplistic and complicated stretches that further complicate the role of items... plus the huge responsibility of an all-or-nothing speed demon. I have NO idea how this one can turn out, but there's tons of ways it can possibly go wrong. I mean, this is a total lie, since we're watching events that have already unfolded and I even had to choose to keep and process it for uploading... it's not like I'd just use my own words against myself and feign ignorance, would I? --- I have a license to use Nintendo’s content in this video through the Nintendo Creators Program.
