(20 Jul 1994) On Wednesday (20/7)Israel's Foreign Minister Shimon Peres became the highest-ranking Israeli official openly to set foot in Jordan after he flew over the Dead Sea to share a table with Prime Minister Abdul-Salam Majali and US Secretary of State Warren Christopher. "The war is behind. You cannot come and sit and negotiate peace with a mind of war or even the ideas or the possibility," Majali told a joint news conference after a two-hour meeting. "The aim is the beginning of peace," Peres added. Peres left Jerusalem by helicopter for the short flight to Jordan. After arriving in the Dead Sea resort, and as the US, Israeli and Jordanian officials began their meeting, Peres said, "It took us 15 minutes to fly over...It took us 46 years to arrive at this time and place of peace and promise." Israeli and Jordanian foreign ministers paid tribute to the occasion, which was televised in Jordan and Israel, and affirmed their goal of peace. "Today Israel and Jordan are stepping out from the old and into the new," Christopher said. "An era or war is coming to a close; this ancient land's cries for peace are finally being heard."
