In Pronunciation Practice #4, we will look at the question “what are you doing” and break down the possible speech reductions. Let me know if there are any other phonetic problems in your life and I will help to alleviate them. Love. Riyadh from Iraq left an awesome comment on one of the pronunciation videos. He said, “when native speakers ask the question, ‘What are you doing?’, it sounds empty. I love that description because it does sound empty. But it’s not completely empty, it’s just reduced. The letter “t” is going to make the “flap t” sound which sounds more like a /d/ (/d/ when pronounced between 2 vowels). The “are” is going to make the schwa R sound which sounds like “er” and together these two words are going to form a contraction that sounds like the word “butter” but with a /w/ .. “wutter” … “wutter” . And “you” is gonna make the “long u” sound just like it normally does. “wuder u” … “wuder u” … And the word “doing” will be pronounced in it’s complete form in the continuous “doing” or drop that “g” and it becomes “doin”, “wutter u doin’?”. If you want to reduced it even more, instead of pronouncing the pronoun “you” the correct way, you can pronounce it “ya”, “wuder ya doin’? So, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” can be and often is reduced to “wuder ya doin’?” @alldayesl. English. Culture. Community. ESL (English as a second language) videos and photos for learning.
