Here I complete Auf Wiedersehen Monty (1987), arguably the final chapter in the Monty Mole series of games. (There was a later game: Impossamole, but that had a very different gameplay more similar to Rick Dangerous and was not written by Peter Harrap). Having locked horns with Arthur Scargill (Wanted: Monty Mole), escaped from Scudmore Prison and fled to Europe (Monty on the Run), Monty is now being pursued by Interpol. In this game he must travel across Europe to sanctuary on the Greek Island of Montos. But as well as getting there Monty must make enough money to buy the island by collecting traveller's cheques and completing various tasks. (Monty can carry 4 items in his inventory and must take objects to various European destinations for more cash). Monty can also teleport across the Europe-shaped map using airports for which tickets must be collected. For full details of what items you need and airport destinations see here: https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/Auf_Wie... This is an epic adventure and a really tough challenge! The game map resembles a map of Europe with screens named after European cities which is a very nice idea. There's some historical significance too with various countries mentioned that have merged or split like East/West Germany, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The European Community (now the EU) is also mentioned and President Gorbachev. This game is much harder than the previous one, Monty on the Run, in that you must collect absolutely every object in the game to complete it, including all 180 traveller's cheques and several other objects. Your final "money" must be 16194 but even if you have that the game might not complete if you have forgotten to collect items which are not worth money (see above wiki for a full list). The platforming and collision detection is less precise than previous games: you can get several pixels into a baddy before you get killed. But the screens are designed around this and you do get used to it so I guess it's OK (though honestly I wish they'd stuck with Monty on the Run's engine). The combination of jumping and rope climbing is still tremendous fun and really sets Monty games apart from other platformers. While Monty on the Run had amazing music on the Commodore 64 but none on the Spectrum this game makes full use of the 128k Spectrum's AY chip to play a funky number which became a very famous ZX Spectrum tune. Thus the Spectrum and C64 games are pretty much identical, the only difference being the C64 you need 18,000 money to complete: the items are the same but some have different money values. Instead of music you can choose to play the game with "anthems" for each country which is a very nice touch. If anyone requests I can run again in "anthems" mode (well, they are not strictly anthems in all causes, Just One Cornetto is not the Italian national anthem for example!). One benefit of "anthems" is you get a rousing rendition of God Save the Queen on the final screen when you complete. Obviously, Monty is a British mole so the Island of Montos can be regarded as British territory like Gibraltar! Perhaps every video game should play God Save the Queen when you complete it... Back in the day I found this game to be intimidating in its sheer scale and didn't get far in it. You definitely need the resources of the internet to beat it and some of the puzzles can't really be guessed at. But once you put the effort in, it's great fun and actually quite addictive. You also need to work out a good route: I've taken this from a video on the C64 version. In completing the game I did cheat a bit, activating a POKE which makes crushers harmless. This is particularly for Rome and Berlin screens where crushers can take random numbers of lives from you most unfairly. But as you can see I finished easily so maybe would have completed without cheating... Played on PC with the Speccy emulator and recorded with OBS.
