Surprisingly scenic Maribor In Sep 2025, we took a day trip from Ljubljana to Maribor by train. Maribor is the 2nd largest city in Slovenia, and is close to the border with Austria. In fact, Maribor is closer to the city of Graz (2nd largest city in Austria) than Ljubljana! The train journey took 2.5 hours, and was a comfortable ride. From the train station in Maribor, it was a short 15 minute walk to the historic Lent district. But first, we stopped for lunch at a Chinese restaurant (what else?) overlooking the Drava River. I must say that the Drava River here looks much nicer than the smaller Ljubljana River (brownish-green murky water) that runs through the heart of the capital. While Ljubljana River has its famous Dragon Bridge and triple bridge, Drava River here has its Lent footbridge and Old Bridge which provide many phototaking opportunities. Similar to Zemun district in Belgrade, we saw quite a few mute swans along the river bank. After walking around the Lent district, we visited the Main Square, Maribor Cathedral and Maribor Castle before heading back to the train station. On the whole, Maribor turned out to be surprisingly scenic and interesting. Unfortunately, we did not have time to hike up Piramida Hills, which we understand would offer panoramic views. We must come back to Maribor again :) The journey home involved a change of trains at Zidani Most, which is evidently a major intersection station for trains coming from Graz, Zagreb and Ljubljana. It was almost 9pm when we arrived back in Ljubljana. Time for a quick supper at KFC before catching a bus back to our Airbnb !
