Institute of Geophysics - guest lectures Petr Kolínký (Institute of Geophysics): Exploring the upper mantle with surface-wave diffraction When surface waves emitted by an earthquake pass a velocity anomaly, even smaller than the wavelength, the seismic wavefield distorts. Delayed and advanced parts interfere, creating stripe-like pattern of various observables. Arrival-angle deviations, precisely measured across large dense seismic networks, such as the AlpArray, far away from the anomaly, allow for localization of the anomaly and for determining its shape and strength. We will present the measurement, modeling and inversion for illuminating remote low-velocity anomalies, mainly mantle plumes. We will also discuss the consequences for determining the local structure under the stations.
