New Brighton Kite Day 2026 - Rehearsal and dismal event

My 2,276th kite video. We have an annual Kite Day here in Christchurch NZ, promoted by the local council and held on New Brighton beach. Sadly, this year's event (today) was spoiled by more of the unfavourable weather this summer has provided. There was a threat of rain (which arrived near the end), strong and very gusty winds blowing kites towards the sea, and very grey skies. Because of the tides, there was less beach than usual to fly on. I chose not to risk my kites, but some people did attempt to fly. Fortunately, I'd had a "rehearsal" five days earlier, with good flying conditions that were a real contrast to today. Many people only take an interest in kites on this one day, so it was very sad to have such bad conditions.
