I’m Just Gonna Walk Up & Shoot One| Neil Pendleton’s 2019 Thanksgiving Day Buck

Back in 2019, Neil Pendleton set out on what would become his banner season, taking five mature bucks in one year across three states. Two with the bow in New Hampshire, a muzzleloader buck in early November, this Maine rifle buck on Thanksgiving week, and a Massachusetts shotgun buck to round out the year. This film tells the story of the Maine buck he tracked down in the snow on Thanksgiving morning. From scouting sign by the brook, to crossing frozen water with taped-up boots, to finally standing face-to-face with a big woods buck just 40 yards away, this is a classic North Woods hunt. It’s raw, real, and unpolished, because this was the very first project Neil ever edited. The entire film was pieced together in iMovie on his phone back in 2019. He’s held onto it for years, but now it’s time to share the story and footage. You’ll see everything, from the moment of the track, to calling in help for the drag out, to weighing in a 209 lb. 6.5-year-old Maine buck at the tagging station. It’s a memory of family, friends, and tradition, and a film that captures the heart of what deer hunting in Maine is all about. Special thanks to Brian Hartman. Shortly after this hunt, Brian suffered a stroke that changed his life forever. Looking back, Neil is so thankful for this moment, helping him haul a buck out of the Maine woods, because it became one of Brian’s last hunts before that life-changing event. His perseverance to fight back and take another deer is nothing short of inspiring, and his story is a reminder to cherish every hunt and every friendship.
