Wrist tendonitis, also known as tenosynovitis, is a condition characterised by inflammation of the tendons in the wrist. It occurs when the tendons that connect the lower arm muscles to the bones in the fingers become irritated or inflamed. This can result from repetitive movements, overuse of the wrist, or injury. Common symptoms of wrist tendonitis include pain, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty moving the wrist. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE therapy) are often recommended for managing symptoms, along with anti-inflammatory medications and physiotherapy exercises to promote healing and restore strength to the affected tendons. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed or squeezed. This compression leads to pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand, particularly in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by repetitive hand movements, certain medical conditions, wrist injuries, or anatomical factors. Treatment options range from wrist splinting, pain management, and physiotherapy to things like corticosteroid injections or surgery, such as carpal tunnel release, to relieve the pressure on the median nerve. What is a Wrist Arthroscopy? Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various conditions affecting the wrist joint. It involves the insertion of a small, flexible camera through tiny incisions in the wrist. This allows the surgeon to visualise the internal structures of the wrist, including bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons, on a monitor. Wrist arthroscopy can be used to repair torn ligaments, remove ganglion cysts, extract bone fragments, and assess the extent of wrist joint damage. The benefits of wrist arthroscopy include smaller incisions, reduced scarring, shorter recovery time, and potentially improved outcomes compared to traditional open surgery. What is Open Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery? Open carpal tunnel release surgery is a surgical procedure performed to alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. It involves making a small incision in the palm of the hand to access the carpal tunnel. The surgeon then carefully cuts the transverse carpal ligament, which forms the roof of the carpal tunnel, to relieve the pressure on the median nerve. By creating more space within the tunnel, this procedure aims to reduce pain, numbness, and other symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Following the surgery, the incision is closed with stitches, and a bandage is applied to the hand. Recovery may involve immobilisation of the wrist and hand therapy. What are Hand and Wrist Manual Therapies? Hand and wrist manual therapies are specialised therapeutic techniques performed by hand therapists to improve the function, mobility, and strength of the hand and wrist. These therapies aim to alleviate pain, reduce swelling, restore range of motion, and improve overall hand and wrist function. Hand therapists use various hands-on techniques, such as massage, mobilisation, stretching, and strengthening exercises, tailored to the individual needs of the patient. These therapies can be beneficial for a range of hand and wrist conditions, including post-surgical rehabilitation, fractures, arthritis, tendonitis, and nerve injuries. The therapist may also provide guidance on home exercises and self-care techniques to support the patient's recovery and enhance their hand and wrist function.
