Research interest in this topic developed among members of the Parasitology research group at the Canary Islands University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health at the University of La Laguna. The work focuses on the study of free-living amoebas from the genus Acanthamoeba, an emerging protozoan pathogen responsible for what is known as Acanthamoeba keratitis, an infection which mainly affects contact lens wearers. It should be known that, if not diagnosed and treated in time, the infection can lead to blindness. We have been able to apply gene silencing in these amoebas, allowing us to validate new target therapies for the development of more effective treatments. Our group focuses on the search for new therapies against these free-living amoebas (chemotherapy and gene therapy). As a result of our work, we have discovered that the use of statins is highly effective in the treatment of these amoebas.
