In this edition of the Center for Latinx Digital Media's Virtual Seminar Series, Prof. Monica De La Torre (Arizona State University) presented "Feminista Frequencies: Community Building Through Radio in the Yakima Valley." Valerie Gruest, a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University and an affiliate of the Center, moderated the event. Presentation abstract: Radio has a history of benefiting rural areas by connecting more isolated communities with the world around them. Monica De La Torre’s new book Feminista Frequencies: Community Building Through Radio in the Yakima Valley centers on the work of Radio KDNA in Granger, Washington Beginning in the 1970s, Chicana and Chicano community organizers and farmworkers turned to community radio broadcasting to educate, entertain, and uplift Mexican American listeners across the United States.
