Music: Ahti Sonninen. Libretto: Yrjö Kokko. Acts: One. Synopsis: Pessi and Illusia is a story/journey of Pessi the goblin (on earth) and Illusia a fairy (from the rainbow) that become friends. The ballet is based on the 1944 book Yrjö Kokko. Filming took place on a constructed set at Otaniemi sports centre. Doris Laine. (Prima Ballerina – Choreographer – Professor/Dance Educator) Born: 31st October 1931. Helsinki, Finland. – Died: 15th December 2018. Helsinki, Finland. Age 87. Miss Laine commenced her dance training at The Ballet School of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet in 1941. By September 1947 Miss Laine started performing with Finnish National Ballet in Sininen helmi (The Blue Pearl) Three Act ballet originally choreographed by George Gé in 1931. January 04th 1951, Miss Laine had performed/Premiered in Bolero (Choreographer: Irja Koskinen, Old Opera House/The Alexander Theatre, Helsinki). Miss Laine married Opera Singer Alfons Almi (Later Director-General of the Finnish National Opera) in 1952. They had one daughter, Heidi Almi who also became a ballet dancer. In the same year of her marriage, Miss Laine performed as Illusia in a break through role in Pessi and Illusia. The ballet had its Premiere Thursday October 23rd 1952 at the Old Opera House/The Alexander Theatre, Helsinki. Miss Laine talks about her role in the ballet. "The atmosphere was fantastic; we were like in the air the whole time" Studying of ballet never stops once you become a professional dancer, it continues through your life on/off stage. Miss Laine always recognised this point; she went on to study at Russian Institute of Theatre Arts ('GITIS') and Moscow State Academy of Choreography. Miss Laine spoke of the importance of dance education. "They made us realize why a movement takes place. It was a great privilege to meet these ballerinas. Then when I came home, I had learned to know what was known elsewhere and I also knew what I needed to learn more." "For a good dancer, it's not just about the leg lifting, but the movement must be a musical phrase". Miss Laine not only performed with the Royal Festival Ballet/English National Ballet as Principal dancer 1964 – 1966. Miss Laine had guest roles with the Bolshoi ballet and Kirov ballet (Mariinsky). She has travelled and performed around the world in over 25 different countries, she also performed on stage in and around Finland amassing during her career hundreds of performances. During her career she has performed in, Such as, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Julia, Coppélia, Cinderella, Don Quixote, Svanhilda, Gaalanäytös. Her last performance on stage with the National Ballet was in the Premiere of Swan Lake (Friday 28th 1976, Old Opera House/The Alexander Theatre, Helsinki) as Odette. Miss Laine’s effortless virtuosity on stage will always be remembered by her audiences and those who had performed with her. Miss Laine offers simple words about dance and life. "You shouldn't complain that things are bad, but find ways to make them better!" Did You Know? Miss Laine’s passion for dance in Finland and beyond, including the future generations of dancers, established the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 1984. Notably past winners from HIBC, Kirsi Aromaa, Jukka Aromaa, Daniil Simkin, Iana Salenko and Meaghan Hinkis. Miss Laine became a Soloist in 1952 and Principal in 1956 with Finnish National Ballet.
