(11 Sep 1997) T/I: 10:03:20 GS 10:41:14 Fighting on the Comoran island of Anjouan has left dozens injured and, it's rumoured, many dead. On Wednesday (10/9) buildings were burned to the ground and as many as 40 of the troops sent to the island to put down the rebellion had allegedly been killed. Another 84 soldiers have reportedly been taken prisoner by the Angouanese secessionists. Comoran President Mohamed Ahmed Taki Abdoulkarim assumed full emergency powers over the Indian Ocean archipelago on Tuesday (9/9). He has suggested French mercenaries may be behind the unrest.
