[ENG] Hedwig of Anjou (1374-1399) - the first female king in Polish history, descended from the Anjou dynasty. Saint of the Catholic Church, apostle of Lithuania. One of the most outstanding rulers in history. Crowned as the king of Poland at the age of 10, during only 15 years of reign she significantly contributed to the development of the Polish state. She annexed Halich Ruthenia to Poland, had the Book of Psalms translated into Polish, and thanks to the jewels she donated on her deathbed, King Ladislaus Jagiello was able to renew the Cracow Academy. Thanks to her marriage to Grand Duke Jagiello of Lithuania, Lithuania, the last pagan country in Europe, was able to be baptized. The queen died at the age of only 25, due to postpartum complications. She gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth Boniface. Both she and the baby passed away from this world on July 13 and 17, 1399, respectively. In 1997 Jadwiga was declared a saint by Pope John Paul II.
