I passed the FAA Part 107 license exam with a 95% by only using online resources (and a couple of books). In this episode, I describe what online resources I used and found credible, and how I put together a study plan that had me passing the test in less than 4 weeks. The FAA Part 107 license is required for anyone who wishes to fly a drone in the United States for any commercial purpose. The rules are spread across multiple documents and sections of the law (Part 47, 48, 89, 91, 107) , and the FAA also requires a significant amount of knowledge from the manned aircraft ground school training such as flight controls, center of gravity, weather reports and weather affects, and pilot risk assessments and avoidance methods. It's no surprise that there are many online training courses that offer to reduce the swirl and uncertainty of what information needs to be studied and retained. It’s even less of a surprise that many of the providers are well known general aviation ground schools given the number of topics on the drone exam that come from the manned pilot world. I decided to try and pass the exam without paying for training, and over the course of my studies I found a lot of material online, some of it was dated and not useful , and some of it was really helpful. In this video, I walk through some of online resources that made the most impact to my studies. If you wish to see this material in written form, I’ve also have a blog version of this video, which can be found on my google drive here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e7lR.... Here are links to web pages and You Tube Channels that I found helpful during my studies: • Sectional Maps ◦ I found that I could download sectional maps from the FAA, along with the chart supplements. They are large files, but looking at my home airport helped. Plus looking at the Washington Metro helped with some of the special area restrictions ▪ Digital Products at FAA: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/fligh... ▪ VFR Charts (ie sectional charts) : https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/fligh... ▪ A digital version of the charts : https://vfrmap.com/ ▪ Done UAS Visualize Maps: https://faa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/weba... ▪ Class E Airspace: https://flighttrainingcentral.com/202... ▪ Drone Pilot School: AirSpace: https://www.dronepilotgroundschool.co... • Weather: ◦ E6BX.com has a METAR/TAF (https://e6bx.com/weather/) calculator. You plug in an airport (ie “KJFK” for JFK) and it gives you the current METAR/TAB.....AND, explains all the shorthand. Invaluable. ◦ AviationWeather.gov also gives you METAR/TAF https://aviationweather.gov/ ◦ Explanation of ATIS, AWOS and ASOS at Pilot Institute https://pilotinstitute.com/atis-vs-aw... • Over People: ◦ Rupprecht Law paper : https://jrupprechtlaw.com/section-107.... ◦ Drone Pilot Ground School had a paper about FAA performing checks upon waivers. https://www.dronepilotgroundschool.co... • Signs: ◦ Pilot Institute again https://pilotinstitute.com/runway-sig... ◦ CFI Notebook https://www.cfinotebook.net/notebook/...
