APD Releases Details about H&R Involving Two of their Officers

Last night, we reported on a near fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian on west Central Ave. This morning, the Albuquerque Police Department released an update to the crash. According to APD, an off-duty APD officer was charged this morning with leaving the scene of a critical-injury crash after he hit a pedestrian while driving a motorcycle at a high rate of speed on Thursday evening at Central Ave. and Coors Blvd. Ezekiel Florez, 29, is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident with great bodily harm. Florez graduated from the police academy in February 2024. He was placed on administrative leave while APD conducts an internal investigation.  Witnesses said the pedestrian, an adult male who has not been identified, was crossing Central Ave. in the crosswalk when a white motorcycle struck him while driving at a high rate of speed. Surveillance video showed the westbound light on Central was green when the motorcycle, which had two riders, collided with the pedestrian who was running south across the intersection. The preliminary investigation determined that when the crash occurred the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed, above the posted speed limit. The motorcycle after the crash then continued on its merry way westbound on Central Ave.  PATREON MEMBERS CAN READ THE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT HERE:   / two-cops-on-near-129702612   At the time of transport, the pedestrian suffered major, life-threatening head injuries and was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Investigators later learned that the two people on the motorcycle at the time of the crash were both off-duty police officers. The passenger who was with Florez, Officer Krystal Garcia, later called another officer and disclosed that she and Florez were involved in the crash. That officer contacted a supervisor who informed investigators at the scene of the crash. Florez and Garcia later returned to the scene and they were detained as part of the investigation. According to the criminal complaint Florez told investigators he saw the pedestrian running across the intersection and he could not get out of the way in time and the pedestrian struck the right side of the motorcycle. Investigators noted that Florez and Garcia failed to call for medical help after the crash and they waited several hours before they returned to the scene. Garcia was not charged with any crimes. She was also placed on administrative leave. It remains unknown if Officer Garcia could be charged under New Mexico Statutes Section 66-7-203, which requires any involved party to STOP, REPORT, and RENDER AID in crashes involving injury or death - particularly given her role in law enforcement. In New Mexico, passengers are generally not held criminally liable for leaving the scene of an accident, but there have incidents where passengers are charged such as in the case of State v. Marquez (2009). Florez was booked into MDC after we published this article. He is being charged with Knowingly leaving the scene of an accident (great bodily harm or death).
