Supporters of Biju Janata Dal burnt tyres and blocked roads in Balasore in Orissa, expressing outrage at what they described as government apathy. Markets and public life in the town were significantly disrupted. Police used water cannons and detained several protestors outside the Odisha Assembly and in parts of Balasore and Bhubaneswar. The BJD, Odisha’s main opposition party, called for a “Balasore Bandh” on Thursday demanding action over the death of a 20-year-old college student who self-immolated over alleged sexual harassment by her teacher.
