The biting cold like sharp blades is present in all directions… A place where life adapts to darkness and ice. In the isolated Yakutia, in Siberia, there is a predator that has become an implacable threat: wolves of gigantic proportions are currently in direct conflict with the local indigenous population, causing panic in the communities that are trying to survive in this inhospitable terrain. This is not an old story, found in old adventurers' diaries, but rather a current situation that has been keeping entire families awake at night when they look out their windows and see hungry eyes watching them from the forest. Current Days - Yakutia, Siberia. Yakutia is one of the most extreme regions on the planet, located in the vast Siberian panhandle, where winter temperatures can drop below -50 degrees Celsius, freezing even the ground into eternal permafrost. This vast, icy territory, comparable in size to India, is covered in tundra, forests and frozen swamps, where life seems to be in a constant battle for survival. The animals that live in Yakutia are shaped by these unforgiving conditions: wolves, reindeer, elk and other creatures adapted to the harsh Siberian cold. In this inhospitable environment, strength is not enough to keep breathing, but adaptability is. In the heart of this territory, there is an indigenous population that knows every inch of this wild land. They are the Evenki, Sakha and other groups who have learned to coexist with the harsh environment over centuries. They live in remote villages, where resources are scarce and any mistake can be fatal. Their lives revolve around hunting and raising reindeer, an animal that provides meat, transportation and essential clothing for survival. But recently, an ancient terror has returned to haunt the tribes: the region’s giant wolves. In recent years, the wolf population in Yakutia has grown out of control. And these are no ordinary wolves. They are fierce, robust predators with a hunting instinct honed by the extreme conditions in which they live. These wolves are larger and more resilient than those found anywhere else in the world. The attacks began quietly at first. An animal disappeared here, a lost reindeer there, but soon the situation worsened. In a single season, the wolves attacked and decimated more than 12,000 reindeer, leaving the indigenous people in a desperate situation. The only solution proposed by the government was to organize a wolf hunt, a veritable campaign that would mobilize experienced hunters and offer rewards for each wolf killed. This hunt has been described as the largest wolf control operation ever undertaken in the modern world, but the worst was yet to come. In the absence of reindeer, humans could be a good food target for these wolves… These wolves, majestic and relentless creatures, have evolved to survive in Yakutia, becoming enormous canids! In other regions of the world, an adult gray wolf measuring 1.60 meters long, including the tail, and 85 centimeters tall at the shoulder is something extremely rare, seen and recorded only a few times. But in Yakutia, these numbers are not only common, they are often even surpassed. So who would stop a pack of super wolves, organized and highly intelligent? Well, Driel Popov, a wolf hunter, tried to accomplish this feat. Driel had promised to hunt a pack that had attacked the reindeer of a nearby village. Armed with his rifle and full of courage, he set off in search of the wolves on his sled in the deep snow. However, contrary to what he expected, the scene found days later appeared to be that the wolves were waiting for his arrival. Two days after he left for a dangerous hunt, a group of men went looking for him and what they found was a scene of true hell on ice. Driel's remains were found next to his sled. The dogs that accompanied him on this hunt were also killed. Bite marks proved that a large pack of wolves could have carried out such barbarity.
