Centre for the Study of Developing Societies invites you to a lecture Rewriting Muslim Histories 1948 Police Action and the Case of Hyderabad by Afsar Mohammad Chair: Priyadarshini Vijaisri Wednesday, 17 January 2024, 4 pm IST Seminar Room and Zoom Link: https://bit.ly/3vpsNqf Meeting ID: 81054386501 Passcode: csdsdelhi This lecture is about the making of an alternative history of 1948 police action in Hyderabad. Despite unprecedented violence and trauma, the history of police action in Hyderabad was totally ignored by mainstream histories. It will explore how the state of Hyderabad was struggling to produce its own tools of cultural renaissance and modernity. By juxtaposing oral testimonies and written narratives that includes fictional and non-fictional works, the speaker will focus on the importance of rewriting the Muslim past and capturing the intense moment of new politics and cultural discourses. Afsar Mohammad teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He is a South Asian scholar working on Hindu-Muslim interactions in India with focus on Muslim writing and Telugu studies. He is the author of Remaking History: 1948 Police Action and the Muslims of Hyderabad. Priyadarshini Vijaisri is Associate Professor at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi.
