The Amazon is formed by the confluence of two large rivers, Marañon and Ucayali, originating in the Peruvian Andes. The Amazon carries almost 20% of all fresh water flowing into the World Ocean, and the area of its basin, almost entirely covered with tropical rainforests, is equal to the area of Australia. I lived 5 days in the deep jungle on one of the small tributaries of this great river, where there was not even a mobile signal. During this time, I have seen many monkeys, sloths, caimans and birds, including the unique hoatzin and the rare manakin (wire-tailed manakin, Pipra filicauda - a breed of birds whose courtship dances resemble Michael Jackson's famous moonwalk). I also saw about twenty gray and pink dolphins. Unfortunately, I did not get a single shot with pink dolphins. They live mostly in small rivers and suddenly pop up in front of your boat, before you even have time to point the camera at them, and then disappear into the muddy water. The giant Amazonian water lilies Victoria regia with white and pink flowers are very beautiful. There are a lot of fish in the rivers here. Early one morning, I went with a fisherman to check his nets, which caught a large catfish, a turtle (the local population eats them with pleasure), a chambira monster fish and, of course, piranhas. It was a unique experience of living in a flooded forest, where you can sail for hours on a boat without being able to get off on solid ground.
