In 1987, graduating seniors Mick Diener and Christoph Cox enlisted a group of students and friends of theirs who had no experience with Balinese performance and had never taken an acting or directing class with me and filmed a demonstration and workshop I gave on strategies and methods used in approaching theatrical mask work adapted from my training in and observation of topeng pajegen performances in Bali, Indonesia. Topeng pajegan is a form of improvised theatre in which a single performer dances and narrates stories based on legendary versions of Balinese history. The performer uses improvised dialogue geared to the time, place, and circumstances of performance, dons both full and half masks, and is accompanied by a gong and chime musical ensemble. Mick and Chris’s documentary includes samples of improvised dialogue based on the chronicled overthrow of a tyrannical King in Bali by the warrior Gaja Madah in 1343 a key moment in Balinese history set down in Balinese chronicles, or babad. In the chronicles, Dalem Bedahulu has acquired the head of a wild boar through an act of hybris, attempting to demonstrate his superiority to the forces of life and death. He has now installed himself on a raised throne and forbidden anyone to lift their gaze lest they see his swinish face. He is defeated by Gaga Mada by trickery. The workshop participants are then asked to take up half masks, given instructions on how to approach wearing them, and asked to improvise dialogue from their masked character’s point of view based on the mythological tale of Stone Soup. 27’54”
