Christmas tree hunting in Idaho is one of our favorite traditions — and today I’m walking you through exactly how to do it, where to go, and what you need to bring. Whether you’re local or exploring a move to Idaho, this is one of the most fun, affordable outdoor adventures you can experience here. 🌲 WHERE TO GET YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE PERMIT Caribou–Targhee National Forest (USFS) Bureau of Land Management (BLM) – Southeast Idaho Get your permit here: 👉 https://www.recreation.gov/tree-permits 🪓 ESSENTIALS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET Permits & Planning • Christmas tree permit • Map of cutting zones (download ahead of time) • Know which species you’re allowed to cut • Check weather, road conditions & access points Tools & Gear • Handsaw or chainsaw • Gas + starter fluid/ether for cold mornings (if using a chainsaw) • Sled to haul the tree out (extra helpful in deep snow) • Firewood • Matches or lighter • Rope, straps, or tie-downs • Trailer, truck bed, or vehicle roof to secure your tree • 4-wheel drive if you’re going off the beaten path Food, Drinks & Traditions • Hot chocolate • Snacks • Leftover turkey sandwiches (our classic post-Thanksgiving tradition 🙌) • Your favorite bevvy for a hot toddy or a little “something-something” in that cocoa 😉 • Plenty of water for kids + adults Cold Weather Essentials • Snow boots/Snow Pants/Jacket • Warm layers • Waterproof snow gear • Gloves • Hat 🗺️ OUR FAVORITE AREAS TO CUT A TREE IN SOUTHEAST IDAHO • Island Park — especially the Chick Creek area • Fall River Road toward Palisades Both areas have great access, beautiful scenery, and tons of options whether you’re bringing the family, snowmobiling in, or just making a quick day of it. ❄️ WHY WE LOVE THIS TRADITION We’ve been cutting our Christmas tree for 17 years.
