During the Second World War, there were many people who collaborated with the German enemy. But inside of France following the liberation of different French towns and villages, there was a brutal and horrific form of public humiliation aimed to shame those women who slept with German soldiers. Many of the women punished had long relationships with German soldiers, and because they were found to have 'horizontally collaborated' with the enemy, they were subjected to The Ugly Carnival. In this event, women had their heads forcibly shaved, and their hair burned in front of them. Following this, they were then forced to run throughout the crowds who hit them and spat at them. Many women of the Ugly Carnival were wrongly accused of being involved with German Officers, and a number had been treated terribly by them. But regardless elements of the French Resistance and the liberators in towns punished them. Some women were even killed by their ordeal inside the Ugly Carnival, and many were covered in tar and were painted with Nazi symbols to highlight to the crowds what they had done. Many of the Allied soldiers who witnessed the proceedings were scarred by what they saw, and were appalled by the way the women were treated.
