My third trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina and I am still playing new great courses. Pinehurst is the Cradle of American Golf and you can easily plan multiple trips with new great courses all within a short distance of each other. On this venture, I played at the Pinehurst Resort, Tom Fazio’s designed No. 8, and the newly redesigned No. 4 by Gil Hanse. No. 8 at Pinehurst is a beautiful as you would expect from a Fazio course and more traditionally manicured than other courses at Pinehurst. Tom Fazio, known for designing visually beautiful courses, perfectly blended his style with the sandhills and tall pines. The course benefits from smooth rolling terrain and has good variety. While challenging, this course feels remarkably similar to a resort course with wider fairways and more inviting well-sculpted greens. I recommend adding this Tom Fazio gem to your list when in Pinehurst. Not only for its beauty but also for the much needed variety. No. 4 at Pinehurst was designed by Gil Hanse, one of golf's top new school course designers. No. 4 feels more like a golfer's playground than a by-the-book golf course. The sightlines are open without tall columns of pines dictating fairways on each hole. The terrain is considerably more undulating. While still easy to walk, the course has the most visually engaging profile of all courses at the Pinehurst Resort. It feels more like a Coore Crenshaw course than a course built to honor the great Donald Ross. Gil Hanse did a masterful job sculpting dramatic green complexes that are more engaging than the previous design. No. 4 is a must-play course in North Carolina.
