In this video Dr O'Donovan shows you how to perform a tear duct massage for your baby. A blocked tear duct happens in around 5% of new-born’s so it’s a really common problem, but thankfully it does not damage the eyes or the vision and is harmless. In most babies, the condition clears by itself before they are one or two years old. CONTENT: 00:00 Introduction 00:42 Symptoms of a blocked tear duct 01:44 A demonstration of how to correctly perform a tear-duct massage 02:38 A brief overview of what surgery for a blocked tear duct involves 03:15 An important condition that you should be aware of (dacrocystitis) Common symptoms of a blocked tear duct include: Watering eye Discharge (e.g. clear or yellowish goop or crusts on their eyelids and eyelashes) Because other things can cause these signs and symptoms – like infections – it’s always worth getting your baby checked by your doctor to make sure everything is ok; but if it is a blocked tear duct causing these symptoms then a tear duct massage (also known as a Crigler massage) can help open the blocked duct so tears can flow through it RESOURCES AND REFERENCES: NHS information on blocked tear ducts in children (UK): https://mft.nhs.uk/app/uploads/sites/...
