(12 Mar 2009) HEADLINE: Pope admits errors in Holocaust denial case CAPTION: Pope Benedict XVI has made an unusual public acknowledgment of Vatican mistakes and turmoil in his church over an outreach to ultraconservatives that led to his lifting the excommunication of a Holocaust-denying bishop. (March 12) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST. Pope Benedict XVI has taken the unusual step of writing a letter to Catholic Bishops giving his point of view on the Holocaust-denying bishop and lashing out against Catholics who attacked him. Last January the Pope lifted an excommunication on 4 ultraconservative bishops from the Lefebvrian movement including British bishop Richard Williamson who denied in an interview that 6 million Jews were killed in the holocaust and said the gas chambers did not exist. In a lengthy letter released Friday the Pope called the the controversy an "unforseen mishap" and blamed the Vatican for not having consulted the internet where Williamson's denial of the holocaust could be easily found. The Pope wrote bitterly about Catholics who attacked him with open hostility noting that "the Pope too can be treated hatefully." The letter was released to the press as the pope was meeting with a delegation of Israel's chief rabbis. The Pope has scheduled a trip to Israel in May and has made a huge effort to resolve the misunderstanding with Jewish leaders. SOUNDBITE RABBIS SOUNDBITE (English) - Rabbi Sah'er Yashuv Cohen, Haifa chief-rabbi: "it was indeed a special experience this morning audience because it marks an end of a crisis" -- Rabbi David Rosen talking with journalists SOUNDBITE (English) - Rabbi David Rosen: "Growing rapprochements with SSPX (society of San Pius X) could have happened under the radar screen as a result of Williamson's outrageous comments. Now it is no longer possible to come under the radar screen, they are under the magnifying glass. And under the magnifying glass it is clear that their statements are totally incompatible with Vatican Two teachings, especially in regards to Jews and Judaism" But in his letter he also insisted that he will not be indifferent to the Lefebvrians noting that it is a movement with hundreds of priests and seminarians. STAND-UP It is unusual for a Pope to write a letter complaining of hostile attacks against him within the Catholic Church and while he seems to have clarified the issue with Jewish leaders, it does not appear that the question has gone away.
