It means to regard the Buddha as the model, use Buddhadharma to transform our false concepts, and see the monastics as our teachers. Some people may think, “Why is it necessary to take refuge even if we have faith in Buddhism and do good deeds according to the Buddha’s teachings?” In fact, learning Buddhism is just like studying in school. If we don’t register in the school itself, even though we go to the class every day, we will never receive a diploma. Likewise, if we don’t take refuge in the Three Jewels we can never become real Buddhists. Even if we read Buddhist sutras and have faith in the Buddha, in such an event, we can only be called “people who are interested in Buddhism”. Therefore, to become real Buddhists, we need to take refuge in the Three Jewels. A refuge-taking ceremony is where Buddhists-to-be take vows to be Buddhists. In the refuge-taking ceremonies conducted by Dharma Drum Mountain, the monastics who perform the ceremony explain the meaning of taking refuge and the Five Precepts, which are the principles for Buddhists’ daily life. These include the precepts of No Killing, No Stealing, No Sexual Misconduct, No Verbal Misconduct, and Abstaining from Alcohol. Then, the monastics perform the refuge-taking ceremony and transmit the Five Precepts. Following the monastic, refuge-taking seekers sincerely recite Three Refuge verses three times by saying “I (the recipient states his or her name) to the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Sangha. I have taken refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.” Finally, as attendees are reciting “Na mo guan shi yin pu sa” (Homage to Guanyin Budhisattva), monastics assist new Buddhists in putting on Buddhist amulets, while giving congratulations and blessings. The monasteries and branches of Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) worldwide conduct refuge-taking ceremonies every year, in the hopes that more and more people can take refuge in the Three Jewels and be benefitted by the correct views of Buddha-dharma. Anyone over the age of 6, and who has never taken refuge in DDM, can sign up for the ceremony on DDM monasteries’ websites, by the appointed deadline.
