A visit to ST HELENA BAY, South Africa - Historic West Coast Town!

Hi everyone! In this video, I take you on a journey through the charming and historic town of St Helena Bay (also known as "Saint Helena Bay" or "St. Helenabaai" in Afrikaans). Located on South Africa's picturesque West Coast, it’s less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town. St Helena Bay, part of the "Cannery Coast," is famous for its fish processing factories, numerous bays and beaches, and as the historic landing site of the Portuguese navigator and explorer Vasco da Gama in November 1497 during his voyage to India. The vlog begins with an exploration of Da Gama’s historic journey and its broader significance for Portugal. I visit the monument donated by Portugal to South Africa in honor of his landing. From there, I set off to visit the Vasco Da Gama Museum in Shelley Point, one of the town's neighbourhoods. Along the way, I unexpectedly meet a friendly subscriber! Unfortunately, the museum was closed during my visit, but I made the most of my time in Shelley Point by exploring the beach and visiting the lighthouse. I also caught a glimpse of the local golf course and the remains of a hotel that tragically burned down in January 2024. Next, I stopped at the Agterbaaier Superette to grab a bottle of water, where I came across a helpful map of the area. The map highlighted the unique, elongated layout of the town, shaped by its history of fish processing factories. I also toured the residential areas of Lampiesbaai and Britannia Bay, discovering how the locals live and taking in the stunning beaches and bays. In another segment of the vlog, I delve into the prevalence of fish canning factories along the West Coast, emphasizing St Helena Bay’s role as part of the "Cannery Coast." I then explore the town's commercial areas, visit the harbour for a quick lunch, and stroll along the main road to observe its rapid development and ongoing construction. One of the highlights of my visit was the Dutch Reformed Church, home to one of South Africa’s youngest congregations. I also took a walk through the surrounding residential area to get a better sense of the local community. Afterwards, I treat myself to a slush drink at a quirky local establishment. As the vlog draws to a close, I visit the resting place of Carl Stephan, a prominent local businessman who passed away in 1900, and make a quick stop at the remains of the hotel. Finally, I reflect on my visit in the tranquil neighborhood of Hannasbaai, soaking in the beauty of the area. I hope you enjoy this vlog about St Helena Bay!
