COLUMBUS (Dawn Faugl/Jen French) -- The trial of a Nationwide Children's Hospital shuttle bus driver began Thursday afternoon. Karl Beem, 62, is charged with vehicular homicide and manslaughter charges, after the bus he was driving struck and killed a researcher, and injured another. David Newsom and Peter White were walking on Children's Drive, in front of the hospital, May 29, 2013 when they were hit from behind. Newsom was killed. White, who survived, testified Thursday, saying "I felt an incredibly force hit me from the back. No screeching tires, it just came out of nowhere and my last memory was 'what's happening?'" Beem is accused of not being in reasonable control of the bus, and negligently causing the death of Newsom. Beem's attorney, Sam Shamansky, says it was a tragic accident. The two men were walking on the side of the road, because the sidewalk was blocked off due to construction. Shamansky says those circumstances should clear the driver of any charges.
