Postpartum pelvic pain: Common symptoms, causes and treatment timelines. Dr. Tayyaba Ahmed is a doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine. She details what happens in the pelvis after delivery that can cause pelvic pain, either by c-section or vaginally, and symptoms that could be experienced postpartum. Topics discussed include: Where postpartum pelvic pain can be felt When this pain can occur Common postpartum symptoms Causes of coccyx pain after delivery When a postpartum patient should be sent for evaluation At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day! At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms. The muscles underneath the uterus are obviously going to get stretched when you have a baby. Postpartum patients can feel pelvic pain in their perineal area. This can be directly after delivery. You can also have pelvic floor dysfunction or pelvic pain after a C-section, contrary to belief, because there is still a baby growing inside that pelvic cavity. A few common postpartum symptoms are pain with intercourse and urinary symptoms, including urinary incontinence when they are exercising or when they're sneezing, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, pelvic pressure. Women also present with pain in their coccyx region. Sometimes during delivery, the coccyx may be fractured or it may shift. When there is a shift in the coccyx, the muscles are now being pulled, and when muscles are pulled, they cause the pelvic floor pain. Many OB-GYNs have asked me when the appropriate time frame is for a patient to be sent for evaluation. Typically, if a patient is not making improvements in their postpartum symptoms, about six to eight weeks postpartum is a good time to send them for medical evaluation.
