In this Episode we travel to Bulgaria. Starting in Nessebar, which is a town in the Burgas Province, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The cobbled streets of the old town, which sits on a promontory, are lined with ruins such as Byzantine-era fortifications and baths. The ruins of the 5th-century Church of St. Sofia include stone columns and large arched windows. The 11th-century Church of St. Stephen houses hundreds of mural paintings and a huge, richly decorated altarpiece We then driver over to Lake Atanasovsko or Lake Atanasovo, which is a salt coastal lake north of Burgas, Bulgaria, located in direct proximity to the Black Sea. The lake is about 5 km long and divided in two by a strip of sand in the middle The healing mud and lye pools are in the south part of the Atanasovsko Lake and are the largest outdoor “SPA centre” in the country. All locals know the place and recently more and more visitors are learning about it, too. The mud and lye are acquired sustainable and this does not hurt the lake inhabitants. The black mud is a proven treatment for different illnesses. Healing mud is a sedimentary product of the enclosed saline lake; it’s clean and homogenous, has a dark grey to black colour and smells of hydrogen sulphide due to the numerous decaying microorganisms. Then we travelled over to the Sand Festival in Burgas, In the Burgas Park “Ezero”, on an area of five decres, immediately next to the beach, every summer there is a city built of sand figures. Every year, the festival theme is different – “Sea World”, “Fairy Tale Heroes”, “Circus”, “Cartoon Character”, “Hall of Fame”, etc. Over 2500 tons of sand is used every year in order to build the fantastic models. The special lighting adds to the charm of the unique sand city in the evening. The sand sculptures festival, organised by Municipality Burgas, welcome participants from around the world – Indonesia, England, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, etc. Data on sand sculptures art dates as far back as Ancient Egypt. In present times it is even more popular with hundreds of competitions, organised throughout the world. Burgas is the proud host of the only sand festival of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula.
