Hogback Mountain | Challenging hike with amazing views - Marquette, MI 2023

This rocky, almost treeless summit offers panoramic views with Lake Superior on the horizon. These views are not without their price. Climbers are required to navigate a narrow, twisty trail that requires four points of contact near the summit as you traverse a nearly vertical rock face. Make no mistake; the views are worth it! Located near Marquette, Michigan in the upper peninsula this trail is intense. Roots and rocks abound and sturdy footing is required. The trail on the last part near the summit is not clearly marked so it’s sometimes difficult to find your way and makes it easy to take a wrong turn. Some words of caution - Midsummer is definitely the peak season! I certainly wouldn’t recommend this trail during the winter. Weather conditions and snow depth in this part of Michigan during that time would make it quite the challenge, if not unsafe. Fall season brings majestic colors if you can beat the sometimes early snowfall. With all the rocks on the trail and the summit I would also use caution hiking the trail in the rain. Having said all that, this is my favorite Michigan trail thus far! The views are just incredible as is the feeling of having conquered the rock scramble and outcropping to reach the peak.
