Dr Ozello's Sports Medicine Report: Bunion AKA Hallux Abducto Valgus ***Disclaimer: Viewing this video does not take the place of seeing a medical professional or working with a fitness professional. Please visit a medical professional for evaluation, diagnosis & treatment. Please work with a fitness professional to learn proper exercise technique & to develop a proper training program. Never perform an exercise that elicits or intensifies symptoms. If an exercise elicits or intensifies symptoms, stop immediately and use a viable substitute. Bunions are a condition that may limit running performance & shorten running longevity. In medical terminology the great toe is named the Hallux. Each hallux contains two bones named the phalanges; the proximal phalange & distal phalange. The metatarsal bones connect the midfoot to the toes. The head of the metatarsal bones form a joint with the proximal phalanges. These joints are named the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. The joints are numbered from one to five, starting with the great toe counting outward. The 1st MTP is located at the great toe. The site of a bunion is on the medial side of the 1st metatarsal bone, just proximal to the 1st MTP joint. A bunion is extra bone growth in response to increased direct pressure. The bunion grows progressively larger as the pressure continues. Pain, swelling and tenderness may be present in and around the bunion site. The great toe deviates toward the other toes. The deviation leaves the medial side of the distal aspect of the 1st metatarsal bone exposed to direct pressure from shoes. The exact cause of the deviation may be from tight shoes or from muscle tightness. The combination of tight shoes & over tightness of the adductor hallucis results in a permanent lateral deviation of the great toe. Due to this deviation, the medial side of the distal aspect of the 1st metatarsal bone is exposed to increased direct pressure from tight footwear. This direct pressure results in extra bone growth, which gets progressively larger as the pressure continues. The bunion is named Hallux Abducto Valgus in medical terminology. Prevention & early treatment are imperative in bunion care.
