Shrewsbury is found in the county of Shropshire in England's West Midlands region (not to be confused with the county of West Midlands!). Shrewsbury is around 10 miles/16km away from the England/Wales border and in its early days was a source of conflict between the two countries. Historically it was part of the Welsh Kingdom of Powys before being claimed by the old English Kingdom of Mercia. There is prominent Norman influence in the town in the form of Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle - both built in the 11th century. From the late middle ages the town prospered due to its production of wool. A number of original Tudor buildings still standing in the town centre are a testament to the historical significance of the industry. Just off Shrewsbury High Street stands a statue of Major General Robert Clive. Aside from a military background he served as Shrewsbury's mayor and later local MP back in the 18th century.
