(1 Nov 2013) President Barack Obama says he has discussed with Iraq's prime minister ways they can work together to stop the threat of an increasingly active al-Qaida in Iraq. Obama spoke after a White House meeting with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki . The Iraqi leader was seeking more American aid to combat the violence ravaging his country. The President stopped short of announcing any new commitments of assistance that Baghdad was seeking. Al-Maliki came to the White House seeking more American aid to combat the violence ravaging his country, including additional weapons and help with intelligence. The violence in Iraq has spiked since American troops left in 2011. Obama says the best way to honour lives lost during the Iraq war is for al-Maliki to work to bring about a functioning democracy. The two leaders also discussed regional issues, including Syria and Iran. Earlier in the day, outside the White House along Pennsylvania Avenue, about 200 anti-Maliki demonstrators rallied in opposition to the Iraqi leader. The organization of Iranian-Americans against Maliki were protesting the alleged massacre at Camp Ashraf and urged President Obama to cut aid to the current Iraqi government. Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives addressed the group - suggesting that Maliki is a puppet of the Iranians. Former Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge also addressed the group.
