A documentary investigation into the cynicism of an industry that tests the toxicity of its products on prisoners reduced to the state of guinea pigs. To then better deny the danger of these substances and their ravages on the environment and health, including that of their own employees. Alice, Kenton, Bucky, Rachna… are the invisible victims of the chemical industry. They grew up in India or the United States, in cities that were built around plastic and pesticide factories. Paternalistic companies that finance stadiums, schools and museums and have supported the inhabitants of the surrounding area for decades. Joining “Dow Chemical” or “Dupont” is the guarantee of a bright future with a nice salary and a comfortable retirement. These two family businesses have, in fact, become the largest chemical groups in the world in a century. Multinationals that rake in billions of euros in profits each year. And promise their customers to “live better every day” thanks to their products. But behind these slogans, the documentary reveals years of lies and denial. In the United States, in the late 1960s, Dow Chemical secretly tested dioxin on prisoners. One of the most carcinogenic products in the world. During the decades that followed, the company dumped the product into the river that runs alongside its Midland plant in the north of the country. In West Virginia, Dupont contaminated the water table with one of the components of Teflon: C8. A molecule that causes thyroid disorders, high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, high blood pressure, kidney and testicular cancer. Today, more than 3,500 patients, residents and employees are suing the multinational. In Bhopal, India, thousands of children are severely disabled because of water polluted by pesticide residues. These human tragedies, the chemical giants have done everything to stifle them. Using scientific analyses and confidential documents, the two directors measure the extent of these contaminations and expose the lies and impunity of these multinationals. All that remains are the testimonies of the victims, those whose lives have been poisoned. They fight, in the hope that one day, those responsible will be condemned… Poisoned Lives: The Underside of the Chemical Industry Director: Jules Giraudat, Arthur Bouvart
